Nurses and the Housing in San Diego

The Cost of Caring When You Can’t Afford to Live Here

San Diego is known for its sunshine, beaches, and high quality of life. It is also known for being one of the most expensive housing markets in the country. For many nurses, that reality has become another full-time job. They must figure out how to live near the patients they care for.

Housing costs have been a major driver of inflation in the region, pushing more families to the financial edge.  Earlier analyses show that while nurses may technically meet the “30 percent of income on rent” rule, they often rent much smaller or older homes. They might also commute longer distances. Sometimes, they live with multiple roommates. In San Diego, one study found that only a small fraction of rentals are affordable for nurses. Most rentals exceed typical nurse income levels.

That math has real consequences. Some nurses take on extra shifts or second jobs just to keep pace with rising rent. Others leave bedside care for better-paid roles in travel nursing, telehealth, or completely different industries. A few move out of the region altogether. Each time a nurse leaves, the staffing crisis worsens—and the cycle continues.

Behind those statistics are very human stories. There is a nurse sleeping in her car between shifts because she can’t afford both rent and childcare. Another nurse commutes more than an hour each way because housing closer to the hospital is out of reach. A new graduate is turning down a job offer in San Diego. They are moving to another state where they can realistically buy a home.

How Whispering Hope International Can Help

Whispering Hope International believes nurses deserve more than survival; they deserve stability. Our role isn’t to fix the housing market. We can help nurses navigate it. We can raise our collective voice for better solutions.

Our vision includes:

  • Hosting financial-literacy and housing-navigation workshops tailored to nurses

  • Partnering with local organizations to explore nurse-friendly housing models

  • Sharing anonymous stories from nurses to help policymakers understand the human cost of San Diego’s housing crisis

When the people who care for our community can’t afford to live in that community, something is broken. Naming this openly is the first step toward change.
